This is a fresh title in the growing sea of LGBTQ YA literature. Girard forcefully conveys the fear Pen lives with, having experienced frequent mockery and bullying, and her courage in aspiring to a safe, loving community for herself and her friends. A strong genderqueer lesbian character, imperfect, independent, and deserving of every cheer." - Kirkus

5/29/2023 0 Comments King of wrath anaThe story follows Vivian, a woman who thought she’d have her freedom for another year or two. Would I have liked fewer time jumps and more swoony moments? Absolutely, but this easily held my interest the whole way through – and it’s got me excited to read more from the author. I also liked the way that this introduced some characters whose stories I’d love to read a true series starter that sets things up without being bogged down by too many threads. I loved that this had darker undertones without going all in – it just added a layer of tension that made the story more interesting, but it never went over the top. Their relationship is a slow burn, especially emotionally, and it simmers in the background before coming to a full boil. My first Ana Huang, and it was a good one! I can see why this author has become so popular – this was soapy and spicy, with a compelling marriage of convenience/forced engagement romance that develops between two strangers who are not very enthusiastic about the arrangement. 5/29/2023 0 Comments At night all blood is black bookFrom within this frame of reference, Diop explores whether the colonial image of African brutality actually begets violence. Diop spent much of his childhood living in Senegal and this novel is grounded in the worldview of Senegal’s Wolof people. At first, his French superiors are happy for him to ‘play the savage’ but before long his killing strikes fear even into his fellow soldiers’ hearts. Traumatised by having watched his friend die an agonising death, Ndiaye responds by turning himself into a killing machine. The narrator, Alfa Ndiaye, is a Senegalese man fighting as an African legionnaire for the French. In a story set in the French trenches of the First World War, Diop conjures up a picture of fresh hell, and takes his lead character into the heart of it. French-Senegalese author David Diop, whose At Night All Blood Is Black won the International Booker Prize, joined the 2021 Edinburgh International Book Festival with translator Anna Moschovakis to discuss their unforgettable short novel. 5/29/2023 0 Comments The dry jane harper book reviewThe author really brought the farm town setting to life, along with the heat and dryness of the place that led to an unbearable drought. The Dry is well-written, suspenseful, and kept me guessing throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and simply could not put it down. This also makes me a bit hesitant as I don’t always understand the hype, but luckily that was not the case here. As a fan of a good mystery/thriller I’m always interested in giving one a try, especially when the reaction to it is so overwhelmingly positive. The glowing reviews of this book inspired me to pick it up. “To look out and see not another soul between you and the horizon could be a strange and disturbing sight.” As Falk and a local detective begin to look into Luke’s death, the mysteries of the past resurface, and it becomes clear that there is more to it all than initially believed. It was twenty years prior that he and his father fled to Melbourne after a young Aaron Falk was suspected of murder and Luke had acted as his only alibi. However, the death of his childhood friend, Luke and a note demanding his presence at the funeral leads him to return. The small Australian town is the last place Falk ever thought he would see again and one he had no intention of ever going back to. Heightens it, more often than not.”įederal Agent Aaron Falk finds himself back in his hometown after a long absence. “Death rarely changes how we feel about someone. 5/29/2023 0 Comments The Hunting Ground by Kirby DickAlong with The Hunting Ground, the duo also worked on The Invisible War, a documentary about rape in the military. “The origins of this project actually goes back several years, arising out of the harrowing stories we heard while doing outreach on two of our previous films,” Ziering said in a statement. “Our film will also underscore the courage it takes to come forward and be a catalyst for change.” “What our film will capture, especially at this pivotal turning point in Hollywood history, is the underlying current of abuse and manipulation at the hands of power,” Dick said in a statement. It will analyze alleged predators in the industry-including Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 50 women thus far. On Monday, the two revealed that they were gearing up for another documentary, this time about Hollywood sexual abuse and cover-ups. Though perhaps it’d be more fitting to say that the disgraced mogul is going under the microscope, thanks to an upcoming documentary by Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering-the duo behind the Oscar-nominated doc The Hunting Ground, which examined rape culture on college campuses. Harvey Weinstein may not be ready for his close-up, but he’s getting one anyway. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Author of the night watchmanPatrice’s father is a violent, abusive drunk who moves in and out of their lives. Patrice, who is known as Pixie and is desperately trying to shake that nickname, works at the jewel bearing plant, along with her friends Valentine and Doris. Patrice Paranteau lives in abject poverty with her mother, Zhaanat and her brother, Pokey. Thomas, a father of five, is working hard to respond to the US Congress effort to terminate the Chippewa tribe and has little time to sleep. The story: Thomas Wazhashk is the Chippewa tribal chairman and works as a night watchman at the Turtle Mountain Jewel Bearing Plant, which manufactures jewel bearings. The novel is in part a fictionalized story of his experiences, but also the story of the native American experience as described through the lives of a variety of other characters. The author’s grandfather was the tribal chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa during this time and worked as a night watchman. This effort attempted to terminate five tribes, including the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. As best explained by the author, “On August 1, 1953, the United States Congress announced House Concurrent Resolution 108, a bill to abrogate nation-to-nation treaties, which had been made with American Indian Nations ‘for as long as the grass grows and the rivers flow'”. “The Night Watchman” is a snapshot of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa during a very eventful time in 1953-1954. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Jane yellowrock book 13Jewelry-making was the occupation of two of her characters: Thorn St. Research led to her life’s passions – jewelry making, orchids, Japanese maples, bones, travel, white-water kayaking, and writing. Ollie's stage combat class, for example, is a pretty significant part of their section, despite not being mentioned even off-handedly in Essie's - it's an interesting writing challenge to have one perspective highlight or minimize certain things versus the other, but it felt a bit off balance to have certain aspects seemingly not exist at all. I also found having the entire first half as Essie's perspective and the entire second half from Ollie's to be a bit of an odd choice: it ended up with some scenes essentially recreated in the second half without much being added by the perspective change alongside plotlines which are not even hinted at in the first part. There's a difference between a book being fast paced and one with scenes so short that it doesn't really feel that there's time for the emotions and ideas within to settle. The basic idea of the book was strong and necessary - there are certainly not enough books with nonbinary characters, especially as love interests, nor are there many with cis characters trying to understand a crush on/romantic interest in a nonbinary character, particularly at the middle grade level - but the execution was mediocre.
